Mozilla的首席执行官Mitchell Baker在上周末暗示，Thunderbird邮件客户端可能会分离出去，但现在正征求用户意见以作出最后决定。
Baker在其博客上表示，Mozilla把大量精力都投入到网络、Firefox和它们周围的生态系统之中，无暇顾及Thunderbird，把它分离出去可能会更加有利于它的发展。
在可以预计的未来，Firefox都将会是Mozilla基金会的的首要任务，这意味着在目前的公司架构下Thunderbird很难得到发展。
Baker表示，一个专注于Thunderbird的独立组织可以独立的发展并且需要这样来发展社区并提高用户的参与度。她表示目前还不能确定这个组织的概况，但已经考虑过多种方案。
第一种选择是为Thunderbird成立一个像Mozilla基金会一样的非盈利性组织，但问题是这种方案很难实施，并且短期内很可能会伤害到项目本身。
另外一种选择是，把Thunderbird作为Mozilla基金会的子公司。这与第一种方案类似，不同的是它需要的组织架构较少，因为Mozilla基金会及其董事会还是会继续忽视Thunderbird。
最后一种方案是把Thunderbird作为一个社区项目来推出，就像目前的SeaMonkey一样。然而，Baker表示目前面临的问题是如何建立维持非盈利性的组织架构。
