Firefox的开发人员表示，Mozilla已经到达了其下一代开源浏览器的一个早期里程碑，但是距离最终版本还是有一年之遥。
Mozilla团队在上周末推出了Firefox 3.0的第一个alpha版，使得Firefox与网络应用程序开发人员可以一睹下一代浏览器的容貌。Mozilla表示，这个版本并不是针对一般用户。
Mozilla工程部副主席Mike Schroepfer表示，Firefox 3.0的代号为Gran Paradiso，距离Mozilla推出了Firefox 2.0正式版才不过六个星期，但实际上它已经经历了超过一年的开发。
最终版的Firefox 3.0预期会在明年底推出。Schroepfer表示，开发者希望这个版本能够向使网络应用程序明显不同于桌面应用程序方向迈出重要的一步。
Gran Paradiso对很多图像标准得到更好的支持，这些标准如SVG语言和Canvas规范。
Firefox 3.0还支持Cairo图像库，这个图像库旨在使得网页跟打印出来或在Windows PC，Mac或小屏幕设备上看到的效果一致。
Firefox 3.0计划整合浏览，书签与隐私加强等功能，但Schroepfer表示目前仍然有很充足的时间来开发新功能，他表示“目前谈论用户交换方面的功能还有点早”。
